Future senior Queensland LNP minister Lawrence Springborg maintains close ties with the Assad regime in Syria, according to VEXNEWS. Apparently he even still raves about the country and defends Assad in private. But is the story even true?

A Sydney man has been shot in the legs, and may not walk again, because of an argument on Facebook over the posting of an image of Syria’s dictator, Bashar al Assad.

Russia and China have both vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have called for Bashar al Assad’s resignation and placed huge pressure on his regime. When even the dysfunctional Arab League, usually so keen to back its own dictators, is calling for Assad to step down, it’s astonishing that everyone else can’t get behind it.

The uprisings and social protests that shook the world last year were just the start. It’s imperative the people’s voice continues to be heard in 2012.

Barbara Walters, one of the elder stateswomen of American news journalism, was granted a rare, exclusive interview with Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad. John Cook at Gawker reports that, instead of confronting him about the atrocities being committed in his country and at his instruction, she placated and pandered.

As part of its crackdown on anti-government protests, it seems that the iPhone has been banned in Syria. And to think, Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian, too.

The death toll reaches 3,000 in Syria, and the world is still flat footed, searching for an answer. The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights has urgen “immediate measures” though, so don’t worry, they’re on the case.

The Hariri assassination was a big turning point in Lebanese politics, and almost immediately led to inescapable pressure on the Syrians to withdraw from Lebanese territory. To be honest, I always thought it them… Sources familiar with the investigation into the assassination of Rafik Hariri in 2005 told Newsmax that the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon will accuse Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei of giving the order to murder the [...]

I love these pieces by the New York Times, diary entries from far flung places around the world. This time, Isabel Kershner visits Ghajar for a few hours, a village somewhere around Israel/Lebanon/Syria. It’s been trampled on, around, through; divided and conquered; and always providing interesting personal identity issues for its inhabitants. Ghajar (pronounced RAH-jar) has a complicated history, adapting to the shifting map of territorial conquests and squeezed between [...]
