But a drive from Muslims in Western countries is trying to change that. From this week’s Economist: Of the seven countries that impose the death penalty for homosexuality, all are Muslim. Even when gays do not face execution, persecution is endemic. In 2010 a Saudi man was sentenced to 500 lashes and five years in jail for having sex with another man. In February last year, police in Bahrain arrested scores [...]

Educator Arie Hasit in a Ha’aretz op-ed: “Every religious community has the right to promote and enforce its laws as it sees fit. Dear Socialist Alternative: Please ensure that you protest about this horrible affront to human rights immediately: In Uganda, plans to introduce draconian new laws against homosexuality look likely to go ahead despite mass protests, a major petition, and condemnation from the international community. The bill, which proposes the death penalty for so-called ‘serial offenders’, has already been described as ‘odious’ by President Obama. A senior minister in Kampala has suggested [...]

For those not up-to-date on the Broadway scene, here’s a story you might not have heard. A new Broadway make of an old 1960s musical called Promises, Promises has just started up again. Sean Hayes (Jack from Will & Grace) plays a (straight) character in love with Kristin Chenoweth (Broadway veteran and Annabeth in The West Wing) and a reviewer, after seeing the play, decreed that Hayes’ performance was shoddy and [...]
