News this week that Palestine was to play its first soccer
game qualifier on home turf, an Olympic qualifier against Thailand. You can see all about it in this video from One’s Sports Tonight featuring everyone’s favourite “Arab affairs [and sport] journalist” Antony Loewenstein.
The video wreaks of poor journalism. For one, if you’re going to investigate how a soccer match in the West Bank impacts on prospects for peace, finding Loewenstein, someone who doesn’t even believe in the process, is a little weird. I also don’t think I’ve ever heard of fighting in the West Bank described as being “between Israeli and Palestinian soldiers”.
It kind of sounds like one of Antony’s mates pitched them the story, gave hints on who should be interviewed (they couldn’t find a single Palestinian expat?) and what the voiceovers and B roll footage should be, and One just did what they said. The story is worthy of a spot, don’t get me wrong, it’s an interesting story, but I’m not sure it accurately portrays the situation Palestinian footballers, or the Palestinian people are in.
I think in the future One should stick to sport and leave the politics to the news networks.
(By the way, for the record, Palestine lost 6-5 on penalties in the match.)
